I used to bunk classes to have ice candies and bask in the sun, says Sheila Dikshit, the Delhi CM and a passout from Miranda House. And the next moment she gets nostalgic and adds, There was absolutely no burden or stress in those days. Each day gave one so much satisfaction. One should make the most of college days as that time will never come back.
We could be ourselves without any hesitations or pretensions.
Be it then, or now, one thing that hasnt changed is the excitement surrounding the first few days in college. Those are the days that the freshers will always remember including the ragging experiences, says Sheila, a student of History.
And what is the Delhi CMs take on ragging? In our times, ragging was simple and innocent. We were simply asked to introduce ourselves and sing and dance, it was not complicated, she recalls. Once a senior, did she rag her juniors? No, I didnt. In fact, I had a completely different take on ragging. As a fresher I remembered feeling like an alien lost in an unknown territory. So when I became a senior I thought, instead of ragging the juniors, we should rag the seniors! she smiles. Also it was in college that she met her partner, late Vinod Dikshit. The most memorable thing about my college life was that I met him that time, she says.
And it was in college where Sheila picked up the habit of reading. The days spent in the college library opened my mind to literature and history, she says. And what all did they do to have fun? We would bunk classes and sit for hours in the college garden relishing ice cream sodas and ice candies, she says. I used to sing too, just like all other children do, she adds.
Also, she followed the Universitys daily ritual of visiting addas. We used to hang out at the Coffee House and the chaat wala stall in college, she signs off.
